Tour Summary

Sun-drenched Andalucia provides an inspirational setting for culinary enthusiasts keen to increase their repertoire with an array of authentic dishes.

Vejer de la Frontera has become the Spanish equivalent of Ludlow “ with its extraordinary selection of brilliant places to eat in a very out of the way place. It's gained the reputation of the dining room of Costa de la Luz.

As the new trend for Sherry bars takes a hold in London and elsewhere, join a gourmet Cooking, Sherry and Shopping odyssey with our Chef's Spanish Kitchen in historic Andalucian white town of Vejer de la Frontera. As well as being a fabulous cook and an inspiring cooking teacher, our Chef is one of the few British women to have qualified as a sherry educator on Costa de la Luz. She will share her passion for sherry and the delicious food flavours of this enchanting Southern corner of Europe.

In addition to 4 half-day cooking classes and sherry tutorials in the kitchen, join her in the Vejer market and learn how to spot fresh fish, recognise different fish types and top quality Andalucian Jamon (rather than Serrano). Don't leave without buying some Spanish food goodies to take home: smoked paprika, bunches of wild oregano, and bottles of spray Sherry Vinegar. Our skilful chef will also escort guests on a tapas tour around her favourite tapas bars around Vejer , and visit the home of the fortified wine, Jerez, for sherry tasting at our selected family-run Bodegas , which continues the tradition of one of the oldest wineries in the region.

During her classes, she cooks with the freshest fish, meat and gourmet local ingredients. Tasty dishes on the menu prepared during the classes can include Fish baked in (local) Salt, Fennel & Lemon Roasted Pork, a Classic Paella, as well as Sherry and Chocolate Cake and Moroccan pastries, all washed down with tasty local Manzanilla among other sherries, rich reds from Toro and Ribera del Duero, and fruity whites from Rueda. EXAMPLE OF ACCOMMODATION IN LA FRONTERA (*)

Hotel La Casa del Califa

Viejer de La Frontera, 4 nights

This hotel takes its inspiration from the days when Vejer formed part of a great Islamic empire that stretched from Damascus to Granada. Vejer is one of the earliest & best preserved of the Arab towns & formed a strategic part in the Moors defense of their new homeland. Almost 500 years of Islamic domination left an indelible mark on the culture, architecture & landscape of the region.

La Casa del Califa is situated in the towns' most important old square, its baroque style fountain surrounded by palm trees forms the focal point of what is considered to be one of Andalucía most seductive 'plazas'. The entrance to the Hotel is directly opposite a fortified 15th.C. tower and the original town walls.

The bedrooms look over a pedestrianised area of quiet narrow streets (two overlook the plaza). A large south facing sun terrace gives uninterrupted views over the Marismas Nature Park & the Sierras de Retin. The skyline is dominated by the various ranges of the Alcornocales of the Nature Park. In this small very personal hotel you will find just the right balance of comfort & decor combined with wonderful views, tranquility & of course excellent service.

The Rooms:

Staying at the Califa is like staying at a large private house with multiple levels, corridors & courtyards dividing up the eight houses that make up the hotel of varying ages & architectural styles. There is a degree of intimacy in whichever part of the hotel you are staying in. Every room at the Califa is different in shape, size, style & decoration and each has slightly different aspects. Most rooms overlook a quiet pedestrian area except no.18 & 'Palmera' (which overlook the palm filled Plaza de España) and the 'Torre' & 'Africa' suites which are double fronted and overlook both the views across the town and country and the Plaza de España.

All rooms come equipped with:

Full tea & coffee making equipment (except 'Small Doubles').
